We are excited to open registration for our Japanese Class for Grown-ups program 2025-2026! Located in Brooklyn, New York, each course consists of 8 classes in hybrid style of in-person and online classes. Courses will focus on conversational language, cultural topics, as well as real Japanese outside of the Genki I textbook.

As a nonprofit organization, Aozora reinvests course fees directly into our mission-driven programs.
Your course fee supports dedicated instructors, thoughtful and culturally rich curriculum, accessible hybrid learning, and the broader Aozora mission of fostering Japanese language learning, cultural connection, and community for learners of all ages.

We’ll cover greetings, sentence structure, numbers, classroom phrases, and reading hiragana and katakana. Topics include everyday expressions, location words, and currency—perfect for first-time learners.

Ideal for those comfortable with basic grammar and kana, this class expands your skills through real-life topics like festivals, food, and travel using Genki I, chapters 5-6. Explore traditional arts like Kabuki and folk tales like Kasajizo while building fluency with comparisons, diary writing, and more natural use of short forms. Continued kanji study supports growing reading confidence.

In Genki I, Chapters 11-12, leaners will complete the first Genki book by learning more complex grammar patterns as well as some famous Japanese celebrations like the Tanabata Fesitval and how Japanese people celebrate the New Year. Learners will also gain a deeper understand of new, complex kanji.
